Any advice on Dog adoption on Oahu

My beloved little guy, Lord Chauncey Von Fontleroy III, passed away recently. We're insanely broken up, but will eventually adopt another dog into our family. I know there's the humane society and SPCA. Has anyone adopted from either place? What was the experience like? Any advice would be appreciated. Are there other establishment that do rescues?

Chauncey was a pure breed Boston Terrier that my mom bought for us. I want to rescue a dog, but this will be our first adoption. What should I be prepared for?
