How does one go about admitting to their family that they had depression. Or if you have done so, how did you do it?

I've suspected that I've had depression for some years now but have never discussed these feelings with another individual. I've never considered my depression to be of importance, it was just something to live with. However a recent post listing the factors that lead the poster to seek aid has made me concerned for myself. I have shared the warning flags that they noticed such as apathy, lost of interest in academics, suicidal ideation on a daily basis, and self-loathing.

I have difficulty speaking to my parents because of the anxiety that they will judge me or 'love me less'. I also fear that they may not believe depression is real, or that what I'm experiencing is not depression because I've managed to disguise it well (I'm often smiling and sociable, traits not common for a person with depression). I could use some advice.
