To go clipless or not

Relatively new rider here, and I was wondering if /r/mtb could help me out. I have a 2012 Trek Mamba and stock pedals, which are far from great. The upgradeitis has struck again and pedals seem to be my next step. I ride mostly singletrack here in RVA and the occassional trip to Massanutten area. I've never used clipless before so I am unsure as to whether or not I should go with them or invest in some better platforms.

If I were to go clipless, what would yall recommend? From trolling around it appears the eggbeaters are a hot commodity.

If not clipless, what are some good platforms?
