Has anyone ever heard of this eerie maritime mystery?

I remember one time, I got fired from my job and didn't ant to tell my step mom so i would leave the house everyday and go to Barnes and Nobles and read various books for hours. One of those books was about unexplained mysteries/phenomenon. There was a section on maritime mysteries and a story that stuck with me went something like this:

A ship comes upon another ship seemingly abandoned at sea. They board the ship and after finding it to be sound, leave a group of men behind to follow the main ship back to shore to claim it as salvage. The second ship falls behind and when the main ships turns around to go see what is wrong, the entire crew left behind is also gone. The captain still wanting his salvage is (with much difficulty) able to convince another group of men to stay and man the ship, and this time they tie a rope to the second ship. After a time the rope snaps and they lose the ship again. They travel back to find it, but never find a trace of the second ship, or the crew left behind, again.

That was one of my favorite stories from that book, but google only produces Mary Celeste.
