Suggestion- NSFW-like meme or custom tags with filter ability to avoid fragmenting subreddits

NSFW

(sorta-repost from the lounge...)

This is a pretty simple suggestion...

Right now posts can be NSFW tagged and they get a special NSFW tag that's hard to miss.

I suggest expanding this system to do other things, and make it customizable per subreddit.

As a subreddit grows and its traffic increases, often the flow of memes and other things force the subreddit to choose between becoming an unfollowable firehose or segregating content into sub-subreddits. A perfect example would be r/sysadmin- two subsubreddits exist, one for memes and another for rage comics. This somewhat fragments the community, which must choose between subscribing to the subsubreddit and getting their frontpage flooded with memes, or not subscribing, potentially missing out on teh funnay. Or if a group of people want to discuss a particular sub-subject without their posts getting buried under more mainstream discussions, for example people from r/guns who are interested in long range rifles (a less common thing), they have to either create a subsubreddit and deprive r/guns of the content, or put it in r/guns and it gets buried under a hundred 'what gun should I buy' posts.

So my suggestion is allow a subreddit admin the ability to add custom NSFW-like tags to that subreddit. So in r/syadmin, [MEME] and [RAGE] would be tags that could be added. Additional tags could further classify content like [NAS/SAN], [WIN], [MAC], [LINUX] etc.

When posting to a subreddit, a user would be given the list of tags for that subreddit and would check off which one(s) apply to his post. In the above sysadmin example, an off-color rage comic about Windows administration might be [NSFW][WIN][RAGE]. NSFW would always be listed first in the page display, or better yet non-NSFW tags would be put somewhere else, IE on the second line after the 'submitted by' bit.

Then users could filter subreddits by tag. To see ONLY posts with a certain tag, they could just go to r/subreddit.tag. Or if they go to the normal subreddit URL, a box on the right side would allow turning tags on/off. Which tags are on by default would be set by the subreddit's admin.

Gold members could then get more detailed filtering. IE standard users can turn tags on or off, but Gold users can say 'only show me the __ most popular [meme] posts' or maybe 'limit [meme] posts to __ per page' or something like that. That way you can enjoy an occasional funny meme without the subreddit getting flooded with memes, overwhelming the smaller number of high-content posts.

The result is it makes it easy to keep lots of good content in one subreddit without fragmenting the community, or having people complain about too many meme posts.

Thoughts?
