Does GP play an okay support?

So, I'm slowly going up ELO, nothing too special yet, I'm currently sitting at 1150, and Its purely been from support, so I have a question; Is gangplank an okay support to play? Although he may no have the healing capabilities such as soraka, and Tarik etc, is his ability for global ulti, and his buff okay to play? I'm not wanting to play him at higher ELO, perhaps just some fun at this level now.
