First time photographer, would should my first move be?

I've finally decided to move from point and shoot cameras, and recently purchased a Canon EOS 600D with an 18-55mm lens. I've given it some use, and I'm happy with what I can do so far, but what can I do to maximise my photography? Is there anything I need to buy or read?
