The next step?

I am a geology student in north carolina and have only one more semester left until I finish up my degree. I just had a quick question mainly aimed towards those that have graduated and found a job in the field. What sorts of things, besides the obvious, should I be doing outside of the class to help get me exposed and set up opportunites.

Currently, I work for one of my professors, helping him on a large NSF funded research project. I love it and have gotten a ton of good experience. Also, I volunteer with one of the graduate students and help him out in the field and lab. I also spend a lot of time hiking and doing some recreational geology along my trips.

I have been looking into graduate school programs recently, as well as considering the other possible option working right out of school. Basically, my GPA is not that strong, so I have been busting my butt to make good grades and do everything I can outside of class to help me either get into a graduate program or land a solid job.

So, what sorts of other things, such as meetings, conventions, research, etc would you recommend for someone in my situation. Thanks for any replies.
