Why does it seem like multiple customers always come in simultaneously?

My boyfriend and I both work in retail, and we were just discussing how often it can be dead at the store for an hour, and suddenly 3 (unrelated) people come in. This happens all the time, not due to trains/buses/lunch time/etc. Is there some sort of mass psychology theory behind this?
