No badges on SMS app?

For the last few days, when I receive a text message it does not show the badge or the notification bar, I hadn't changed any settings or tweaked anything; it just randomly started occurring. I tried restoring - nothing. Anyone have any ideas?

I am running on 5.1

edit: just checked, also no badges on my phone app. I'm assuming no badges are working. It is really frustrating.
