Career path for somebody who doesn't want to work for a Big 4 accounting firm?

I see all these posts about people working 60-70 hours a week during busy season and not getting paid overtime and it doesn't sound appealing at all.

• What is the best way to go in the accounting profession without working in public accounting?

• In the long run how much do you think avoiding working for one of the Big 4 would affect my earnings potential?
