Plant suggestions for first herb garden?

Hi r/gardening! I did a search but couldn't find a thread with answers specific to my question, so here goes:

For the first time, I have an apartment with access to a planter in the back yard. I'd like to set up an herb garden in it. I think I can do a good job of researching general advice, but could you guys suggest some good plants to try my hand at?

If possible, I've already decided I'd like:

  • Basil
  • Chilies
  • Carrots
  • Tomatoes (maybe, I don't love eating them but I know people who do and they seem to be a "classic")

The planter is pretty big (4' x 18'), so i think I'd have room for a couple more selections. Can you guys suggest something for me to consider? I think I'd prefer herbs/food to flowers because I like the idea of being able to make use of it, but I'm not completely set on that. I'm in Boston, to give you an idea of the climate. Thanks for the help!
