Struggling with intensity

Last night I had a pretty intense trip, not intense by some standards but intense enough for a new-to-psychedelics tripper like myself to start losing his cool. The first 3 hours were very difficult to make through, difficult meaning I was struggling to come to terms with how intense the trip was. I was experiencing time dilation for the first time where I'd be sitting in the car with my friends for what seemed like an hour but only a minute or 2 had passed. It freaked me out and I kept thinking "I'm only 2 hours in, it's going to get more intense. Can I handle it?"

Are there any experienced LSD users that have tips for coping with overly intense trips? Are there any ways to cope with overly intense trips? or do you just have to ride it out and hope that you wont experience eternity within an hour.
