Confused about how to use Eve effectively

Still trying to beat mom's heart with Eve but I can't quite figure her out. Is the idea to get hit once, then have your bird deal damage? Also, her 'curse' is quite useful when I'm in a bind but am I supposed to actively try to get down to 1/2 heart to use it?
