Got the Beta? Click here to find out how to be a good Beta tester!

Hi everybody! Pancakes of Gorgonnash here with some (hopefully) helpful information. You may have seen my videos before but I'm not here to be silly, it's super serious mode today. The Pandaria Beta is here so I thought now would be the time to share some information about what you should be doing besides running around yelling "YAY I IS IN THE BETA!!"

WHAT IS A BETA?

A beta means that roughly 70% of the game is complete. It's playable but there are lots of issues still in the game.

WHAT IS MY ROLE AS A BETA TESTER?

Your job is simple. Play the game, find bugs and submit them to the dev team.

WHY SHOULD I?

Because everyone is counting on you to help the development team crunch as many bugs as possible so the final version of the game isn't a buggy piece of shit. If you're not submitting bugs you're not being a good beta tester.

Okay, how do I begin?

It's simple. Just play the game, play the game as you usually would until eventually something goes wrong. Here are some examples of bugs you may find:

  • Missing tool tips.
  • Spelling errors.
  • Skills and abilities not working as described.
  • Male character has female voice, or no voice at all.
  • An ability is severely unbalanced in pve or pvp.
  • Game freezes when alt+tabbing.

I found a bug, what now?

Let's pretend you found a bug about a missing animation. Let's say it was an issue with the Sea turtle mount. It is gliding across the floor instead of walking. This is a pretty big problem so you wanna write it up. But before you do check for the following:

  • Does it happen all of the time? Can someone simply log into the game, summon the mount and it'll happen for sure? If it happens all the time then you can specify it happens 100% of the time. If not then try and get an average. Maybe it happens 3 out of 5 times, maybe it only happens very rarely. It's important you specify how often the bug can be reproduced.

  • If it specific to that mount? Maybe all the mounts are broken and not just that one? Summon a different mount and check to see if they don't have running animations either. If not then it's very likely your bug is specific only to your turtle mount.

Now that you have some solid information you can go ahead and write it up. The best thing to do is break it down into steps. Try and describe it to someone so that they could reproduce it by following your steps. I will now show you an example:

BUG: Turtle mount has no running animation.

Steps to reproduce:

    1. Log into a character that owns the Sea Turtle mount.
    1. Summon the mount and ride it around.
    1. Notice the mount has no running animation.

Occured 4/5 times.

Where do I submit my bugs?

There should be an in-game option for feedback, you can submit them there. You can also use the Mists of Pandaria Beta Bug Report forum found here.

And that's it! If anybody has any question I'll gladly answer them! Will also update the post if it hits front page with more detailed info.

I would like to add one more thing. The single most important thing about testing a game is squashing what we call a "showstopper" bug. This can be any issue that prevents you from playing the game any further and includes but is not limited to: Crashing, freezing, unable to turn in an important quest, loss of character control, and more. It is extremely important that these kinds of issues be submitted and brought to Blizzards attention asap so they can get to work on figuring out how to fix them. If you can provide information on what you were doing before this happened it would help a whole lot too.

Happy testing! Have fun out there.

Thanks for reading!
