Proxy decks: how do you do them efficiently?

I want to make a proxy of an EDH deck I really like but is a tad too expensive for me to want to buy it, so I was wondering if there is an efficient way to proxy a full deck? Also, I am generally curious about the mtg communities' feelings on proxies: do you let your friends do it, if so under what circumstances or conditions, if not why, etc.
