A Scanner Darkly; Hard to understand without the book?

I read the book this past week and watched the movie today. I can't shake the feeling that the movie, despite having word for word dialogue in a lot of places, cut a bit too much of the small stuff out. What Keanu says about Thanksgiving in the end doesn't even make sense without context does it?
