Need some help deciding what games to get.

So i'm buying a ds lite from a friend that doesn't use it and i'm not sure what games to get. I've played all the generations before the ds but don't know where to start. I would like one from each new generation but is it worth it to get soul silver when i've played silver many times? Thanks ahead of time!
