Too late to start?

I've always had a small interest in playing Starcraft (I/II)... do many n00bs still start playing these days? I'd like to pick up the game but I don't want to get destroyed every single game I play. Any advice for someone that hasn't played before and would like to? I played the C&C a ton back in the day and I love RTS games but it's been a while... Thanks in advance.

EDIT Wow thanks to all who gave a response! I really appreciate the effort given, I will definitely pick up the game soon. This seems like a bad-ass community right here!
