Is His Dark Material still enjoyable as an adult?

HDM was probably my favorite YA/teen book series as a kid and I've been thinking of a re-read. Does it still hold up as a good novel for adults or is it better just to read something else?

EDIT: Thanks for the great response! I just downloaded the Golden Compass onto my Kindle and it's the next book on my to-read list!
