How do you say "to keep a lie"?

I want to say the verb phrase "to keep a lie" or "to maintain a lie", if you know what I mean.

For context, the whole sentence (which maybe has mistakes) is:

"Ich denke, dass der Inhalt des Films nicht glaubwürdige ist, weil man konnte nicht solch eine große Lüge (keep)."
