Whats the best way to surf and torrent securely without anything coming back to you?

I was looking at VPNs, in particularly ipredator, but their blog was saying how the new data retention laws might make them move to another country and that our best bet is to use things like Tor and i2p but I always thought VPNs were the way to go.

So what is the best way to stay anonymous and hidden? and what service do you guys recommend?
