Blew up my control valve

I am a big DIY guy. Well today my pride took a hit. I hooked up my gas valve switch to a power source (which is not good!) and flipped the power. What followed was some sparks and a loud bang. Then there was smoke in the room. I turned off the power and cursed for awhile. So what happened? I know I will need a new valve but can someone explain?
