I want to learn about ancient Rome; any suggestions?

My interest has been sparked by the republic period and how surprisingly democratic it was. I'm open to both fiction and nonfiction, I generally want to learn about this civilization's culture, so I suppose the best way to do that would be through fiction which allows for much more immersion.
