How is it possible to measure the acceleration of the expansion of the universe?

Since there isn't any significant time interval (relative to the age of the universe) with which to compare expansion velocities, how is it possible to measure a difference in velocity over time?

What I would guess is that it is possible to do this measurement using distant objects whose light was emitted when the universe was expanding at a slower rate, but that's just a guess.
