Disconcerting gem change: Gems no longer socket in armor, no longer give bonus to base stats

Browsing the item guide on the official site, I discovered that socketing now only has 2 modes (weapon and helm) from the previous 3 (also armor). Without using gems to fine-tune base stats, it feels like the core mechanic of gemming has been gutted.
