Reddit, has anyone had any luck with making a family tree?

Making a family tree has always been something I've wanted to do. I've heard mediocre things at best with online resources such as Ancestry.com

I wouldn't mind paying if I knew it would yield good results.

So anyone have any success? Tips? And if you found out some cool shit about your family I'd love to hear
