What effect would removing Jupiter from the solar system have on the rest of the solar system?

I was just reading a passage from a book that said one of the reasons the asteroid belt exists is due to the gravitational pull of Jupiter. And if Jupiter was not there, they would coalesce into planets potentially.

Just wondering if anyone can comment on this and other effects that would occur if Jupiter was suddenly removed
