If I'm doing number theory algorithms, what languages should I be using?

Also is python to slow for most things? And what libraries are good for number theory?

I tried doing some computation stuff on R, suffice to say it didn't work out to well, so I figure their might be some experts who do these things who could point out better alternatives.
