Why is there so much ignorance in the United States?

Before you say "every country has ignorant folks" think about this, the united states isn't like every other country. we have tons of universities, libraries, unregulated internet, and news media that is not state ran but there are still people that don't know the difference between Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein(just using that as an example)
