(hopefully) Helpful note on colors for Putty users
I use gnome-terminal to play Nethack on nethack.alt.org instead of Putty, since I use a Linux distro, but I've both heard negative things from Putty users and noticed notes in people's menucolors options about how dark blue is hard to read.
When out and about I used Putty on a Windows computer to play, and found out firsthand just how horrible Nethack looks with the default Putty settings. How do you play?!?
I adopted the color settings for my terminal for Putty. I played for a while using them, and it was again a pleasure to play. Hopefully these settings can be of some help! Don't forget to save the settings so you don't have to enter them again, either as Default Settings or as Nethack (in case you prefer the old settings). I don't know whether you can export these settings or anything so I think you'll have to enter these by hand. :(

Note #1: If you use OPTIONS=hilite_pet:1, pet foreground (inverse but not cursor) still looks a bit funny. If you have a fix, please reply and I can change it.
Note #2: These colors are just what I've found pleasurable and what I'm used to. Feel free to change 'em!
Cheers!
