Why is sex such a taboo topic with muslim parents?

Seriously, I don't know if it was just my parents but did any of your parents make sex an extremely taboo topic and a really bad thing? I mean my parents didn't even let me take sex education classes in school. They also portrayed sex as something so bad into my mind that I found it to be disgusting growing up.
