Ammo advice?

I'm picking up my first handgun on Monday. (Damned California ten day wait) Any advice on what ammo is best? It's a Glock 22 .40 S&W. I mainly want something that I can use for target practice that won't jam up or leave behind excessive residue. Thanks in advance.
