Video Card Issues on HTPC - Part II
This is a continuation of this post, I wanted to start another post in case anyone had already looked at the other post they might still take a peek in here.
THE ISSUE I have a Dell Vostro 200 that I've added an Asus EAH5450 video card to. On computer startup I see my Dell splash screen, then the WinXP splash screen then the display goes black. I'm connected to a Sony HDTV via HDMI.
I was able to log onto the computer via LogMeIn but I got the same black screen however when I went to log off the desktop flashed visible for a second and I saw an error notice that said something to the effect of "No display adapter found." This confuses the hell out of me as it's obviously found because it shows during the splash screens on startup and in safe mode.
WHAT I'VE TRIED TO FIX IT
UPDATING DRIVER: PC won't let me. Tried in safe mode, downloaded the drivers on another PC and loaded on a USB drive to get them on the HTPC. When I run the setup program for the driver it tells me "ATI Catalyst Install Manager failed to load detection driver." I click OK and it exits setup. Also tried updating via Device Manager but it tells me no update found.
HDMI STRAIGHT TO TV: This was suggested in the other post as I'm running the HDMI via a hub since my TV only has one input. This didn't help, I had the exact same errors. All other devices on the hub are working fine.
DIFFERENT HDMI CABLE: No luck, same errors with a different cable.. Also tried that cable on another device and it worked fine.
RUNNING SYSTEM RESTORE: I can boot into Safe Mode and run System Restore however once the PC reboots after running the restore it goes right back to the black screen.
It was also suggested that I try HDMI Detective to eliminate issues with the EDID handshake. I haven't tried this yet but it really seems the issue is with the card or driver based on what I've seen.
I know I've asked a ton of questions already and I appreciate the help so far, if anyone has any other suggestions I'd appreciate any input.
EDIT - Well, I tried System Restore once more and went back over 2-weeks, it worked and now I can see my desktop just fine. I just hope it doesn't continue to do this as it's really a PiTA to use System Restore once a week.
