Help getting into the game?

I just recently got terraria, and I here my friends talking about skeletrons and glow sticks and hell and mithril swords and mother slimes and other things. I am really confused... Is their an easy guide to get into the game? I have figured out the main stuff of it and all I have really done is built a really tall tower.
