ELI5: Who Profits from the useless ads that plague so many websites?
I understand the idea of marketing and its benefits in the long term, but I'm so confused as to why there's even an industry of making advertisements for fake or useless products. Anybody who has ever visited places like The Pirate Bay knows what I'm talking about. Whether they're for a new electronic cigarette or 'how to get ripped in 6 hours', they all lead into a black hole of pop-up and siren-like noises blaring from the speakers.
So my main questions are:
How is there any money to be made from these things when people have learned that they're useless and don't click on them?
How successful are these kinds of things? Moneywise
Who are these Titans of Business that are raking in all the cash (or not)?
I've included some pictures to be more specific.
Example 2 In this one, you can see the ads are actually overlapping eachother. And I know I'm not the only one who has felt the urge to delve into the world of Grepolis.
Example 3 Probably the most well known ad in modern day.
Thanks in advance for any knowledge you can pass along to me!
