Pokemon question

To start, I know nothin about Pokemon. My son who is almost six asked for a Pokemon game. He fell in love with pikachu playing super smash brothers. Just wondering if the game would be to advanced for him? He's just starting to read but that's never really stopped him from figuring out games. Also, what would be the best game to get? Thanks
