Is there any danger in buying a salvage title car?

Hello, everyone =] My family is looking for an inexpensive car to add to the family just to have an extra vehicle. We keep running into salvage title vehicles, which we know could mean many things, but we're not sure if it's a good decision to buy one. What are some good things to keep in mind and/or be aware of?
