New faces with old promises, it must be EUSA election time again.
So I've been around the university for a while now and for at least the past three years the same election promises have been made by various candidates:
-
Improving the bus service to KB/Easter Bush
-
Longer library opening hours
-
Bike lanes to KB
-
More study space in the main library/George Sq area
-
"Ethical" investment in food suppliers
Some of the election promises drive me crazy, but not as much as the candidate's failure to deliver!
Starting with the promises for extended library opening hours - if someone's in the (minority) position where they're choosing (or having) to study in the library at 2am then surely they should be rethinking their attitude towards their course instead of campaigning to pay more staff on a 24 hour rota?
FYI candidates - most postgraduate students have their own dedicated study space already and do not need to use the library. So that promise is a lot of old s**t.
Whilst I'd like to see some of these changes happen, I'm unconvinced from the scales of certain propositions that they've even thought about the costs involved in implementing them - including which other university budgets will be cut to pay for these changes.
I've chatted to a few candidates in the lunch areas and some (one in particular) really hadn't got a clue... he was promising things that are not in demand or are actually in place already, and with no idea of how to pay for them.
So this is a message for the provocative "wannabe-a-politician-after-uni' candidates - SORT IT OUT.
If you actually deliver on your promises and don't treat it exclusively as a CV opportunity, not only could your integrity increase student involvement in EUSA politics... EUSA itself will be treated as less of a joke.
love, Fluorophore. x
tldr: Rant about the failure of previous officers to deliver results from seemingly recurring election promises. Grrr.
