Hey Reddit, what space combat mmo can I play with my 9 yr old that doesn't suck?

I've played Eve Online (too complicated for this) and Black Prophecy (boooring, but maybe). What's r/gaming's opinion on a good space combat game that won't be way too complex for a 9 yr old but won't bore his 40 something dad to tears? Ideally something we can play together.

Galactica seems like my best bet, but I played it when it was in beta and was very unimpressed. I'd prefer something free to play just so we can try it. I won't be offended if it has a cash shop. PVP probably will turn my kid off.
