My Pro/Con list about the movie from a person who takes books very literal. [Spoilers Book 1/2 and Movie]
I have mixed feelings about the movie. I didn't love it, and since I loved the source material so much I can't hate it, however I wish they would have said "Loosely based on the novel..." With that said:
Pros - I absolutely loved the casting of Haymitch, Cinna, Caesar, Rue, and Gale. The tributes parade felt very condescending to me and I thought that added a nice touch. Granted it wasn't on purpose but, like Effie, The Capitol is so out of touch. I loved the rapport between Caesar and Peeta. I feel like they captured the book perfectly with the smelling each other part. Lastly I loved the not mentioned in the book parts. Haymitch twisting arms to get sponsors and the gm's running the game.
Cons - There are so many. I wrote them all out and I have 7 pages of cons. From things that were so trivial there was no reason to change them, to things that had such an utmost of importance to the story being changed for no reason.
First and foremost, the entire series was one big inner monologue. There was none of that in the movie. I suspect Hollywood found the idea of having a smart leading lady to be offensive so they made Katniss as retarded as possible. She couldn't possibly know what Haymitch wanted her to do by the gift or lack of gift so he had to write her a freaking note. She had no idea that if you run a serrated blade across a branch it would make the limb fall onto the careers until rue did the sawing motion and indicating the branch would fall.
Enough generalizations. Time for the line by line based on my memory.
Kat is instantly singing to prim. Kate and Gale don't meet at their normal spot to start fishing, instead he deerblocks her. She has no cheese with her. Haymitch was not at the reaping. No Madge. I realize they needed to show the hob, but Greasy Sae doesn't sell trinkets, especially mockingjay pins with arrows through them. No mention of the weird customs in District 12 with their salute. Neither Madge nor Peeta's father visits Kat in the Justice Building. Haymitch doesn't ever give his at first sarcastic, then serious, sage advice of "Don't Die." Peeta and Kat were acting awe inspired of Haymitch like they'd never saw him before. Peeta doesn't get hit in the eye by Haymitch. Kat doesn't throw a knife into the wall. Never a mention of Avoxes. Prep teams work in near silence. Cinna immediately opens up with I'm sorry, disregarding his line in B2 of "I focus all my emotions into my work." Cinna doesn't tell them to hold hands. It was Peeta's idea and Kat is at first resistant. Effie never mentions how pearls are made. Haymitch never tells them to be at each others sides at all times, and for the most part they aren't. As a followup to that, there is never the line of do exactly what I say and exactly what the stylists say.
Nearly no time spent at the knot tying area and no time at the edible plants area. For no apparent reason Kat has her private training with the gm's before Peeta. Kat was taller than Peeta, as tall as Thresh, and much taller and heavier than Clove and potentially Glimmer so there would be no reason they couldn't have scaled the tree after her. The tracker was not injected while stunned by the current in the ladder, really no mention of the current ladders at all. The mockingjay pin isn't barely approved, it is smuggled in by Cinna. The Cornucopia looks nothing like a cornucopia. Kat doesn't fight for the orange pack, and doesn't pick up the sheet of plastic. Cloves knife doesn't hit her in the backpack as she's running away she instead uses it at a shield while laying on the ground. Within 15 seconds after leaving the bloodbath, Kat has already killed a squirrel, started a fire to cook it, and drank from the massive river running through the entire arena. Kat never uses her sleeping bag, and doesn't cinch herself in with the belt. Instead she uses a massive rope. The pack instantly kills the girl who starts the fire. Since Peeta doesn't have to go back to kill her, he conveniently goes deaf as they are talking about killing him.... right in freaking front of him. Kat is the only person affected by the fire and only the fire. Smoke plays no part of her danger, and as such doesn't calm the Tracker Jackers at all. Kat doesn't start the sawing at night during the anthem, and with no smoke, the TJ's sting her about 4 times before she's made her 3rd stroke. No shiny hallucinations. Peeta never fights Cato as Kat escapes. Kat doesn't make for water first, instantly goes for bow/arrows which she has no problem removing from Glimmer. Kat wakes up with flat leaves on her, nothing chewed up, no mention of how that is for TJ poison. No mention of the chronic hunger in District 11, and no mention of I've never had a whole leg before. Hunger, dehydration, and cold play absolutely no part of this movie. There is no mention of the night glasses, and no spying on the Careers before the plan to blow up their supplies. Rue knows precisely where Peeta is for some strange reason. Foxface doesn't fall when hopping the land mines, and boy 3 didn't go with the careers. He just happens to be looking the other way then chases her away. Kat's first arrow starts to open the bag, but she acts as if she has missed and moves closer. She's deaf for all of 5 seconds. No temper tantrum from Cato.
Kat cuts Rue from the net and they hug for a while. Finally boy 1 shows up and throws a spear at Kat who dodges and shoots him in the chest. No bread from district 11, but conveniently enough they do manage to spoil book 2. Hovercraft never pick up the bodies. Kat never goes through Rue or Marvel's packs. Kat still on the ground mourning Rue when the rule change is announced. Kat doesn't cry out Peeta's name and then try to pull it back in. By extension, this is not the moment Caesar knows they are in love. Kat goes straight to Peeta who has painted himself into the rocks and covered himself with moss. Doesn't matter that he can't get to water because no one ever gets hungry or thirsty in the arena. Kat doesn't start forming the bond with Peeta by cleaning his cloths, treating his wounds or even worrying about him surviving. There is no pus draining, no mention of fever or fever pills. There is no blood poisoning and no telling stories about Prim's goat. Haymitch has to spoon feed to Kat one kiss = one pot of broth because she's obviously too stupid to figure anything out. Kat doesn't conceal the entrance of the cave, but it isn't necessary since they spend all of 4 hours in the cave. No story about Peeta's dad loving Kat's mom, and how he loved her when the birds stopped to hear her sing. He says he thinks about the bread everyday because Kat can't have any sort of guilt. Peeta doesn't say that he'll crawl after Kat screaming if she goes to the feast. No sleep syrup. Kat missed Clove twice. Clove hit Kat on first knife. All backpacks were the same size and the packs don't rise from the ground, so for some unknown reason Foxface was hiding in Cornucopia for no reason till she finally decided to run for it. Thresh never questions Kat about Rue, no mention of singing her to sleep, the non-existent bread, or the pleading for a quick death. A freaking cream to treat blood poisoning, that also heals knife cuts to the forehead. No passing out in a pool of blood, no being nursed by Peeta, no her favorite feast in the cave. The cream also fully heals Peeta's leg, so he's able to run very fast. No nibbled cheese, just a cannon followed by Kat searching for Peeta.
Instantly turns night, Thresh killed by mutts and his picture is displayed seconds after the cannon. Doesn't shoot Cato in the clearing as he's leading mutts, because he isn't leading mutts. They attack before Kat and Peeta make for the pond. Although there is no reason to go to the pond because there is water freaking everywhere and no one is hungry or thirsty. The mutts don't look like the tributes, and they don't jump for them. As such Peeta doesn't get bit, doesn't need a tourniquet, and doesn't lose his leg. Cato doesn't have the military grade mesh clothing on, no bloody X on his hand, and no fighting off the mutts, then slowly over the course of an entire night being tortured to death while Peeta is bleeding to death. Kat instantly shoots him in the face. It is a good thing she hit the mark too, because she only had 20 million arrows left in the quiver. Since Peeta is perfectly healthy, no mention of I'll go before you as he removes his tourniquet. No trumpets. No loveseat. Pres Snow sucks on his thumb a few times and there is never blood or redness on it. No puffy lips, and he rarely has a rose on him. No hovercraft ride back to the training center, no going berserk as Peeta dies multiple times. No time in rehabilitation because they never suffered a wound in the arena, and constantly had full bellies.
If I missed anything feel free to add it, and I realize most of these are so trivial it doesn't matter, which is why I can't fathom why they were changed.
