Dumb question, but need it answered regardless!

I have a pretty strong feeling I already know the correct answer but I want to ask it anyway. When a creature is attacking and met with multiple blocking opponents does the creature do his damage on each one seperately? Say a 3/3 monster get blocked by 2 2/2's does that mean he does 3 damage to their 2 toughness on each monster or does he have the split the damage. Meaning one of the monsters dies and the other survives with 1 damage to his toughness? I figure it is the latter but would like to get a confirmation, thanks!
