Modular vs. Full Face Helmet

I will soon begin riding, and the time is coming for me to buy some gear. One of my best friends, who already rides, swears by his modular helmet, saying it's much more comfortable, just as quiet, and just as safe. I have heard, however, that modular helmets are louder, and can offer less thorough protection, as the the part that flips up introduces points of weakness to the helmet. What are your guys' opinions on it?
