How to know if a man genuinely just wants to be friends vs date you?

Quick backstory: went to a friends party and ended up chatting with a guy for a bit. He ended up asking for my number. I’m never one to say no when someone asks for my # unless something seems off, so I gave him my #. He within the following days started texting me a lot, calling a number of times even. From past experience when guys are like this they are looking to date. I’m not looking to date, atm so I sent him a text basically saying I wasn’t trying to lead him on and that to be clear I wasn’t looking to date anyone at this point in my life. He responded to this saying I wasn’t leading him on and he would just love to get to know me. Following this, he continued to send texts, asking if and when I could hang out and continued to call as well. At that point I kind of ignored him, and tonight he sent an angry text saying i shouldn’t have given given him my number and I wasted his time by giving him my number since I’m not keeping convos going. I feel like for someone who was just looking to be “friends” he is being clingy and coming off as desperate. Thoughts?
