I think we should really be critical toward the Halo devs about how they treat people that commit genocide
I think it's a bit tone deaf to give someone we see destroy a world of people a redemption. Fuck Halo 2

They got us in the first half ngl. I thought this was about >!Cortana in Infinite!<.
winks
winks back
I mean, the arbiter during his career in the covenant has likely made decisions that cost the lives of humans. According to halopedia, "He and his forces were responsible for over 1 billion human casualties—over 23,000 of them military personnel—and the destruction of 123 UNSC ships." He pretty much got his own redemption story yet he basically contributed the genocide and slaughter of humanity.
Exactly. I think it would be very bad if they redeemed him. Like, imagine if Cortana somehow went rogue and killed millions, I doubt she'd get a redemption arc...
Well I mean, I wouldnt call it a redemption arc, atleast not with the brutes and Australia, but its more or less closure with her relationship with chief and all the mistakes she's done. She realized she made mistakes and she needed make up for her mistake, even at the cost of her life.
I agree. It's almost like I am, in fact, making a joke about how most Halo fans were fine with 2's redemption arc but not Infinite's
arbiter was brainwashed and as soon as he found out the truth he immediately turned against his brainwashers.
cortana was not only in control of the forerunners' data banks, she was in control of the precursor domain. she had all the info and made her choice out of free will. also she was top dog in the entire galaxy whereas whereas arbiter was almost literally a really high ranking slave whose mind and body were both owned by the heirarchs.
there's nothing comparable between cortana and arbiter. i don't really care who you hate more and who you think is more deserving of a redemption arc, this is not something i'm really that interested in. if you think arbiter is worse, great. if you think cortana is worse, great. i have no horse in this race and i don't really mind either of them getting "redeemed". my only point is that they're just straight up not comparable.
and Australia,
Honestly, she did the galaxy a favour. People chow about the Flood, and 343 might be jerking the Endless now. But Australia's fauna were the true threat.
tbf the arbiter was part of a crusade so he is free of sin
...damn, fair point
Ya tricked me so good!
What redemption? For a soldier like Master Chief, saying that the guy who designed the Battle for the Infinity and successfully took Zeta Halo makes perfect sense. Master Chief simply acknowledges his military skills.
What are you talking about?
Not every character needs or deserves a redemption arc though. Don’t have to Steven Universe every story.
Yeah, but why on Earth doesn't Cortana deserve one? She's a central character to the story.
Because it seems like the only lesson she learned was that she forgot the power of teamwork, based on her own words. Not that, hey, galactic tyranny and genocide are bad. Those weren’t just mistakes.
...does Cortana literally need to spell out "okay I learned genocide is bad" for you lol? The Arbiter, funnily enough, also never says "I am sorry I killed 1 billion people" but funnily enough we can infer he is.
Sorry bud, I’m simply not going to be all that endeared to a character who already betrayed their so-called friends in the previous game effectively on a whim, commit genocide, and then ramble on via Forerunner voicemail about how the real problem was she forgot she and Chief were a team. That seems to be the extent of her remorse.
Surprised Greenleafcm isn’t here to further hate on Cortana. Good post op.
Be honest, everyone we see as heroes or villains (in real life or fiction) has probably committed genocide
Assuming someone is nothing but an angel is stupid, but assuming they are nothing but a demon is equally stupid.
The Arbiter was just a soldier, hoping he’d done the right thing
To stop shitposting for a minute, I feel like the Arbiter-Chief relationship makes Chief sort of empathizing with Escharum even a little make perfect sense. There was a throwaway line in Shadows of Reach about how Chief wanted to retire and join the Diplomatic Corp and I am all for it.
I don’t buy that throwaway line for a second, that sounds ooc, and there’s no way in hell that 343 would make Chief a diplomat.
I mean, they won't even if John may idly want it after having a rough mission, but I think you're underestimating just how good he'd be. He alone is probably way less averse to aliens than like 90% of the population, and he is great at dealing with the unexpected.
Chief empathizing with Escharum after the fight has me wondering if we might start getting a couple moments where Chief tries de-escalating tensions with Banished etc. he runs into at certain points. It's definitely not going to work most of the time, but even Chief of all people trying to offer that hand out before he's met with them aggroing and the Weapon going "can't say you didn't try!" or whatever would be a pretty refreshing route going forward versus Chief just mindlessly clearing house with every interaction.
With the Covenant and Cortana gone there really isn't any big player still around who's going to be unilaterally pitting every member of every species against humans like before, even if the Banished end up mostly blaming humanity for Cortana blowing up their homeworld. Since it's pushing for more of an open-world format it'd be fun to try, even if you only ended up with a couple Grunts palling around with you for a while or something.
