Help with new setup. I may have bought the wrong combo of CPU and MB.

Open | Hardware

I have an AMD Ryzen 5 5600G CPU(so it could at least be used while GPU shopping) and a Gigabyte B550 GAMING X ATX AM4 Motherboard. I see that I may need a BIOS update so am I just screwed unless I can find an older CPU that will let it at least POST?

I do happen to have an old RYZEN 5 2600X but that's not getting anywhere either.

Any help would be appreciated. It was parts I bought for a christmas present so I'm hoping I didn't completely screw up.

Thanks!

Your motherboard also seems to supports updating your bios without a cpu, so if you have a way to download and set up a usb flash drive for that you should be ok. If the process is anything like on other mobo's you should be fine, I had to do the same for my mobo.

What the shit? It's been a minute since I built a PC and I had no idea that was a thing. Thanks!

I never knew this was a thing either. Can you share the steps you took to do it?

Mine was a Gigabyte so I watched this one.

Right on Gigabyte's product page they list the supported Ryzen generations, 5th gen is supported so it should work right out of the box, have you tried it yet?

PC Part Picker says this.

Yeah, tried it and no dice.

In this case you will require a Ryzen 3000 series processor to update the bios, call some local shops and ask if they can do it for you, if you're canadian then MemoryExpress is a good place to start, if you're american, then try Microcenter. Alternatively, you could buy a Ryzen 3000 series chip from somewhere if they have it in stock, and then just return it, or buy one used off Facebook markerplace or something, then just resell it after? Gotta think outside the box on this one I suppose. You could also contact Gigabyte support and ask for an updated board, or you could return that board and buy a different one that is up to date

As u/BlanIt pointed out, I was able to flash the BIOS with no CPU. It's all good now.
