Distortions

I looked in the mirror

A brief moment

All I could bare

My face was in pieces

Some were not mine

Two eyes encased in glass

A mouth sewn together

A fractured skull

Pieces of my face

Broken off and turned inside out

Pieces floating freely

In a shape of what I think was me

I turn on the sink

Wash the colors of your skin down the drain

So many colors

I move the paint around in my hands

This is you.

Your delightful smile

Your gorgeous hair

Your neck, your hands

All flowing between my fingers

Only your colors left

I can almost feel your warmth

In the paints

But they wash away

I feel like a god

Manipulating your skin between my fingers

Tearing you apart pigment by pigment

If I was truly God

I would examine each drop

Make them sizzle

Like breath trapped inside

Make them float around me

Like planets around a star

But I’m not

So they just wash away

Down the drain and into a void

And finally, acquiescently

I am alone

In a tiny bathroom

Deathly silent

Walls intruding

And a damned voice telling to look into that mirror

Oh, hi there; didn't see you! You've reached r/OCPoetry. This is a workshop site where you can share, read, and talk about eachother's poetry & etc. To post your own poems, you need to give feedback to 2 other writers. If you aren't trying to share, you're encouraged to give feedback, but aren't required. Try to be nice, questioning, and specific. If you can't do that - eat a cabbage and come back later. Try to give feedback to a writer without any feedback. Lastly, read our feedback guide , other writer's comments, or this author’s feedback links. Great poem describing the elusiveness of the self. Our conscious mind separate from the flesh and bone of our being. The part that best describes this is “Some were not mine.”

Love it. The imagery is really nice. I love the first 3 lines of the 6th stanza

i love the imagery, it feels very artistic and contemporary with the breaking and the pieces and the movement of color; the message is interesting with the tricks and abilities of the mind and the true smallness of ourselves. my favorite part is “wash the colors of your skin down the drain / so many colors / i move the paint around in my hands / this is you.” feels very human and heartfelt. love this :)

Thank you! You pretty much got the interpretation down. A kinda delusional artist's who let's their imagination become a part of their reality. The artist had just finished painted a portrait of someone they love in an attempt to bring that someone into their reality.

I don't know whether this is right or not but I get the impression that the voice of the poem is holding their dead lover in their arms. I feel as if they have either just witnessed their death or are the cause of it and cannot bear to face themselves as the guilt of the act is weighing on their mind. I feel like the pigment is a representation of the blood draining down the sink, not theirs but their lovers and they are desperately wishing that they were still alive. I feel like it is the voice's conscience telling them to look into the mirror, to face what they have done, but the voice cannot, will not take responsibility for their actions.

Just an interpretation :)

Oooo, that's way more dramatic than what I went with. I like it. I'm gonna pretend that's what it means now.
