Not closing school after xmas/new years sounds like a terrible idea.
The timing in relation to the omicron peak has been unfortunate. That couldn’t have been anticipated a month or so ago. I think it caught many leaders by surprise.
It was identified on Nov 26th, certainly has been dominating the news since then, with many warnings out of Europe where it had a head start that the holidays would be a precipitating series of events.
We could have even looked to NYC to see all the warning signs.
I definitely think it could have been anticipated a month ago, and was, by anyone willing to listen.
The unvaccinated ones that needed to see the evidence and listen. Stop blaming the wrong people. 100% of ICU patients are unvaccinated.
Gonna need a source on that, if nobody who was vaccinated ended up in the ICU there would be almost no breakthrough case deaths.
I’m trying to be charitable here. I wouldn’t want to be the one making these decisions.
The federal government kicked the can to the states, and the states are kicking the can to the people. We have to learn to live with it now.

Over 10,000 cases today, calling in the national guard to help nearly overwhelmed hospital systems, multiple schools closing due to Covid absences, and no new restriction?
What the fuck.
I really did not appreciate the press conference today. They kept repeating that layered mitigation strategies are what's needed. Looking at the science of Omicron, layered mitigation strategies are largely pointless. The 6 foot rule, general masking rule, etc are clearly not enough to slow the spread. You could have everyone wear N95s, but even that is negated by a less than perfect seal, you'll be hard pressed to get 80% compliance on that.
If you look at European countries who have reimplemented Delta and Alpha style lockdowns, it has slowed practically nothing. Look at Israel who has 4 doses, masking, etc. They also have skyrocketing cases and rising hospitalizations.
The best we can really do is tell people what to do to stay safe, expand access to testing, vaccinate and boost, and make sure to staff essential positions. That's really it
The time to put mitigations in place was three months ago.
If you want to look for evidence n95s don't work because of an imperfect seal, you'll be looking for for a very long while.
