Morning Civil Twilight
up and early
the darkest time of day
this ball of fire
singing my name
is it a sign for me to never
look back the way i came?
or an omen i’ve known
without thinking or breathing
without belief of what i’m seeing
leading me to believe
that it’s more than a feeling
you fiery moon
connected like me
to a truth unseen
not the sovereign sun
but her dark black lungs
these waves and I
are not the same
but just as the light
bleeds through the tide
the sparkle in my eye
was never even mine

This paints a lovely picture of blacks and golds, sun lingering on the dark places. I enjoy the flirtatious danger of the sun, the balance of loneliness and kinship with a godlike entity that isn't something you will ever touch, but it touches every part of you and life around you. I could feel the cold that takes over the edges of things when the sun is gone, much like loneliness itself. I feel like there is more to this poem, maybe you haven't written it yet or felt it yet, but there are unexplored corners in this that I bet you have the words to bring to light in the same corners of your mind. Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on it. There is definitely more to this one that I could flesh out on but I guess I normally just keep it short. The main thing I’ll say is that I wrote it about the moon I saw a couple mornings ago. about a half hour before dawn I saw the moon over one of the great lakes and it was fiery red sitting over an enormous body of water. The poem tries to encompass an idea I had when looking at the moon. I thought, if the moon is so unconnected physically to our world but it’s beauty still lies before my eyes affecting the very sight in front of me, reflecting it’s fire onto the water, then what out there am I completely oblivious to that is ruling over and affecting my very being. the moon pulls the tide, does God tug away at my soul? There’s another idea I had that I tried to incorporate into the poem: Is there a definite truth of the universe out there? Yes, but it is forever unknowable. this unattainable truth governs over and connects everything. The moon is essentially a smaller scale version of this truth that affects and or connects reality via its affect on earth itself through things like the tide. The stars, in this case our very own “sovereign sun,” are one of the biggest baddest things out there in this universe that we can see all the time, and the part of the sun in question is its “dark black lungs” that is in my mind analogous to that unknowable truth that governs over and connects everything, which could be putting that sparkle in my eye, or whatever life essence I’ve got you know. I heard in a podcast that back in the day before artificial light existed, people would essentially be able to see the vast beautiful milky way on any clear night, basically all the time… this humbles you! when the galaxy is before your eyes you can’t help but feel put in your place and humbled. The person talking said, when you see the beauty of the universe like that, you feel connected. That just resonated with me and seeing this moon made it all click and I wrote this poem. It is essentially just encompassing a moment in time I experienced and what I was feeling at the time. I appreciate the comment man
