Best Crab Rangoon in Columbus #1

Hey guys! Lots of love on my rangoon post, so I went ahead and made the first rating. Categories are Filling, Sauce, Wrapper, and Value. Value is not contingent on how good the rangoon is (i.e. even the best rangoon could get a low score in this category if it's expensive), but flavor is more important to me, so the value category is only worth 5 points and the rest are worth 10.

Started with Eastern Bay since it's fairly close to where I work. Enjoy!

Eastern Bay, 2055 Riverside Drive, 6 rangoon for $7.95

Filling - 6/10

Sauce - 7/10

Wrapper - 4/10

Value - 3/5

Total - 20/35

Filling - The Eastern Bay filling is a rare sweet one. It almost resembles funnel cakes. I feel like I should have powdered sugar on top of them. That may not be your thing, but personally, I like the sweet filling. I think it’s unique and fairly rare among rangoons. I think the filling is a very good flavor, but the rangoon suffers from a lack of it. This is a common issue in the triangle shaped rangoons; the filling to wonton ratio is typically off.

Sauce - Eastern Bay continues to distinguish their rangoon from a typical one with their sauce. It’s a delicate orange sauce that I’ve never seen offered up as a rangoon dipping sauce anywhere but here. I like it a lot, but my one complaint would be that it is a sweet sauce and a sweet rangoon. The sweetness can get a little too much, especially when they give you 6 of them.

Wrapper - The wonton wrapper isn’t dense or overwhelmingly oily like some rangoon I have seen, but there was too much of it to compliment the filling well. It was the dominant flavor. I also found that around half of my rangoon had been left in the fryer a little too long and the edges were too crispy for my liking. While this is absolutely a case by case basis, it is going to lose them a few points.

Value - With the total coming to around $1.30 per rangoon, this isn’t a super good deal, but it is also not the highest I’ve seen. Pretty average.

Overall - While this is a good rangoon, I don’t know that it’s worth going out of your way for. It gets points for being unique, but the lack of filling and sweet on sweet flavor keep it out of the top tier rangoons.
